Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest stars of the early MTV era, selling five million copies of her debut album, She's So Unusual, as well as scoring a string of four Top Ten hits from the record, including the major hits "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Lauper's thin, girlish voice and gleefully ragtag appearance became one of the most distinctive images of the early '80s, which helped lead her not only to the top of the charts, but also to stardom. Throughout America, there were numbers of teenage girls dressing like Lauper and using "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" as an anthem, a call to arms for self-expression. At first, her music was a bright, colorful new wave fusion of a number of styles, including new wave, post-punk, reggae, pop, and funk. Both her music and her appearance helped popularize -- and just as importantly, sanitize --- the image of punk and new wave for America, making it an acceptable part of the pop landscape. Lauper didn't follow through on the success of her debut, choosing to turn toward middle-of-the-road balladry and mainstream pop, but her first album remains a benchmark of the early '80s.

lt's hard to believe that "Whiskey Woman" LP was never released on CD! This excellent debut album by the American band was issued in early 1972 on RCA Victor label and is best described as blues-based, very energetic hard-rock inspired by Led Zeppelin, Free & Humble Pie - with catchy, but heavy guitar riffs, solid rhythm section and great vocals. It's worth noting that all tracks were recorded completely live - with a small, invited audience. Unfortunately, the album went almost completely unnoticed, although the band got at least a chance to record their second (and equally good) vinyl. This CD was carefully remastered from the original, analogue source and will surely appeal to the most fans of raw and spontaneous heavy rock!

Gregg Allman's tour in support of his debut solo LP, Laid Back, led to the recording of this album (originally two LPs) at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. It's a match for Laid Back in musical value and then some, with a good, wide range of repertory and great performances throughout by all concerned, plunging head-first and deep into blues, R&B, honky tonk, and gospel. Strangely enough, the album contains only three of Laid Back's songs -- "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" opens the show in a properly spirited, earthy manner, but it's the second song, "Queen of Hearts," in a soaring rendition, with gorgeous backing by Annie Sutton, Erin Dickins, and Lynn Rubin, and superb sax work by Randall Bramblett and David Brown, that shows Allman in his glory as a singer and bandleader. Allman gives a lively, raucous, honky tonk-style rendition of the Elvis Presley hit "I Feel So Bad," complete with a killer guitar solo by Tommy Talton, and "Turn on Your Lovelight" gets an extended treatment worthy of the Allman Brothers Band. One would expect that, with Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe present in the band, there were be more similarity to the Allmans' sound, and that they'd be prominently featured, but Tommy Talton and bassist Kenny Tibbetts get more of a spotlight. Several Allman Brothers songs are present here, in more laid-back and lyrical versions, and the Capricorn Records band Cowboy -- essentially serving as the core of Allman's touring band -- gets a featured spot with two songs, "Time Will Take Us" and "Where Can You Go," that leave one wanting to hear a lot more concert material from them, and from Talton as a singer. The Gregg Allman Tour was reissued on CD in late 2001 by Polydor in a clearer, sharper remastered edition that contains Martin Mull's complete introduction of the band.

This is the CD debut of superb, but still relatively unknown, hard-psychedelic LP based on moody, but intense guitars, distinguish organ/piano parts & complex vocal harmonies. Released by United Artists in early 1970, the only record of this US band showed the influences from The Beatles, The Moody Blues and Neil Young, but mainly from great, but underrated Damnation Of Adam Blessing - from which the two members provided some guitar work to the album. Wild Butter have offered a varied, imaginative and beautifully-arranged songs (with progressive attitude) and should appeal to fans of creative, melodic and sometimes quite heavy rock. This CD has been carefully remastered from the original, analogue source
