bsIke & bsTina bsTurner - The Soul Anthology (2006)

Label: Master Classics | Release: Jan 10, 2006 | MP3 VBR-Kbps | 2CD | 176 MB
Genre: Pop, Rock, Soul, R&B

SOUL ANTHOLOGY is a 2-disc, 44-track set that serves up some of the best material Ike & Tina Turner put to tape. Finding a comprehensive compilation of the dynamic duo, especially one that isn't hampered by poor audio quality, can be a tricky prospect, but SOUL ANTHOLOGY is a good bet. Four complete studio albums are included here, as is the single version of "River Deep-Mountain High," produced by Phil Spector.

The duo's band, led by Ike on guitar, is a crack unit, and their high-energy R&B is in excellent form here. But the real spotlight, naturally, shines on Tina, whose powerhouse performances, dripping with soulful rasp and raw rock & roll energy, make a case for the artist's 1960s work as among the most vital and powerful of the era. For a one-stop dose of this dynamic outfit performing full force, this is about as good as it gets.

Recording information: Los Angeles, CA (05/07/1966).

Arrangers: Ike Turner; Jack Nitzsche.

Personnel: Ike Turner (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, background vocals); Tina Turner (vocals); Eugene Goff, Glenn Ross Campbell , Barney Kessel, Jackie Clark (guitar); Larry Reed (tenor saxophone, piano); Larry Blake, Mary Lee Reed (tenor saxophone); Bishop Berry, J.D. Reed (baritone saxophone); Harold Carrol, Claude Williams, Mackinley Johnson (trumpet); Charles Hunt, Edward Burks (trombone); Ernest Lane, Leon Russell (piano); Edna Richardson, The Ikettes, Vera Hamilton (background vocals).

Liner Note Author: Athan Maroulis.

Uncut (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The blend of slow-burning confessionals, gospel/secular showdowns, sizzling rock, proto funk and bristling blues updates prove that, in the studio, they easily matched their potent live reputation."

bsIke & bsTina bsTurner - 38 Rare Recordings (1991)

38 tracks | Genre: Soul, Early R&B, Pop-Soul | Release: 1991 | MP3 320 kbps | 310 MB

38 Rare Recordings is the most comprehensive of many similar collections of Ike and Tina rarities, if only for the sheer volume of songs included; there are good reasons why a lot of this material is not more widely known, but enough of these performances are worthwhile to make the set necessary for fans.
