The Definitive Collection unites original recordings from Humble Pie's early-'70s A&M output, highlighting the gravelly vocals of ex-Small Faces frontman Steve Marriott along with the driving guitars of first Peter Frampton and then Frampton's replacement, Dave "Clem" Clempson. During their peak years, Humble Pie were the premier boogie band. Their output of the era inundated album rock radio with the originals "Hot 'n' Nasty" and "30 Days in the Hole," Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody," and the Ray Charles-inspired epic "I Don't Need No Doctor," which was recorded live at the Fillmore and was Frampton's swan song with the band. Also included are several hard-edged cover versions of blues classics -- "Four Day Creep," "Rollin' Stone," and "I'm Ready" -- which were a significant part of their regular live set at the time. While there are other, more exhaustive compilations, such as the double-disc 1994 set Hot 'n' Nasty: The Anthology, this is the best concise overview of the group's career, containing the most hits on a single disc.

This two-for-one disc collects the pair of albums that Humble Pie recorded after frontman Steve Marriott and drummer Jerry Shirley resurrected the British group's name in 1980. By this time, of course, the ensemble's most famous alum, Peter Frampton, was long gone, and these outings--recorded with guitarist Bobby Tench and bassist Anthony "Sooty" Jones--stray from the band's original blues-rock template considerably, leaning towards a heavier sound that, at times, recalls AC/DC. ON TO VICTORY (1980) found a surprisingly large audience with its hard-rock edge, though that mood is tempered here by songs such as the reggae-like "Savin' It" and the funky "Over You." GO FOR THE THROAT (1981) begins with an amped-up, metallic take on Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up" and continues in the vein of the earlier album. Fans of Humble Pie's Frampton era will likely be perplexed by this release, but, for aficionados of early-'80s hard rock, these often-overlooked records may be a pleasant find.

Truly one of the most gifted and talented singers in the 70's, Steve Marriott was a black man trapped in a white man's body. His soul was so deep in the ryhthm & blues that he not only wrote it, he sang it, continuously. Once onstage you here a man possessed by the power of soul. He sang nonstop during his concerts even going as far to sing the inbetween song banter that most fans dont usually want to here, but Steve made it interesting. Kicking this show off with the rocker Up Your Sleeves segueing into 4 Day Creep, Steve and Co. are in fine spirits. C'mon Everybody is just as powerful as the studio version and Humble Pie's version ofHonky Tonk Woman has got to give the Stones a run for their money. Revved up blues like Blues I Believe and Road Runner cement Steve's reputation as a voice to be reckoned with. By the time I Don't Need No Doctor and Hot N' Nasty are played, Steve's been singing his arse off for well over an hour, so if he sounds weak and tried you won't mind, because in that first hour you'll experience something you've likely never had or ever will again in music.

H'N'N takes 31 tracks and spreads them across two discs, competently representing HP's blues boogie sound through the span of nine albums. Not only does this set compile the most worthy material from the band, but it also demonstrates how their sound changed slightly as the 1970s progressed. The first 11 tracks are taken from the band's first three albums, with the rare but worthwhile single "Big Black Dog" sandwiched in between. "Natural Born Woman," along with the brown-dirt gruffness of both "Buttermilk Boy" and "I'll Go Alone," are the best examples of HP in their early stages, while their self-titled album from a year later hands over the shaky "One-Eyed Trouser-Snake Rumba" and the rolly-polly enthusiasm of "Red Light Mama, Red Hot."
