The Band was an acclaimed, influential, chart-topping rock music group. The original group consisted of Canadians Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboard instruments, saxophone), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals), Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals), and American Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals). All five members were notable musicians in their own right.


The members of the Band first came together as they joined rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins' backing group, The Hawks, one by one between 1958 and 1963. Upon leaving Hawkins in 1964, they were known as The Levon Helm Sextet (the sixth member being sax player Jerry Penfound), then Levon and the Hawks (without Penfound). In 1965, they released a single on Ware Records under the name Canadian Squires, but returned as Levon and the Hawks for a recording session for Atco later in 1965. At about the same time, Bob Dylan recruited Helm and Robertson for two concerts, then the entire group for his U.S. tour in 1965 and world tour in 1966. They also joined him on the informal recordings that later became The Basement Tapes.

Because they were always "the band" to various frontmen, Helm said the name "The Band" worked well when the group came into its own and left Saugerties, New York, to begin recording their own material. They recorded two of the most acclaimed albums of the late 1960s: their 1968 debut Music from Big Pink (featuring the single "The Weight") and 1969's The Band. They broke up in 1976, but reformed in 1983 without founding guitarist Robbie Robertson.

Although the Band was always more popular with music journalists and fellow musicians than with the general public, they have remained an admired and influential group. The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them #50 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and in 2008, they received the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award

While this is not ideal picture quality, (but really not that bad!) it has FANTASTIC performances of many of BJHs most important songs. It also has an extra track (Rock & roll lady) not credited on the cover. And by the way, the audio is spot on.
One reason this is a 'must have' is that it has a live version of 'Play to the World' included - one of the great songs of all time. However, the entire 50 minutes is fab - and a record of BJHs first 25 years, recorded back in 1992. Mockingbird, Medicine Man, Play to the world, Life is for Living, Rock and roll lady, Poor Man's Moody Blues, Stand Up and Hymn....

Bachman–Turner Overdrive (frequently known as BTO) is a Canadian rock group from Winnipeg, Manitoba, that enjoyed a string of hit albums and singles in the 1970s, selling over 7 million albums in Canada in that decade. Their 1970s catalog included five Top 40 albums and six Top 40 singles. The band has sold over 20 million albums worldwide, and has fans affectionately known as "gearheads" (derived from the band's gear-shaped logo). Alice Cooper (born Vincent Damon Furnier; February 4, 1948) is an American rock singer, songwriter and musician whose career spans more than four decades. With a stage show that features guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors and baby dolls, Cooper has drawn equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock to pioneer a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock.


Alice Cooper was originally a band consisting of Furnier on vocals and harmonica, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce on rhythm guitar, Dennis Dunaway on bass guitar, and drummer Neal Smith. The original Alice Cooper band broke into the international music mainstream with the 1971 hit "I'm Eighteen" from the album Love it to Death, which was followed by the even bigger single "School's Out" in 1972. The band reached their commercial peak with the 1973 album Billion Dollar Babies.

Furnier's solo career as Alice Cooper, adopting the band's name as his own name, began with the 1975 concept album Welcome to My Nightmare. In 2008 he released Along Came a Spider, his 18th solo album. Expanding from his original Detroit rock roots, over the years Cooper has experimented with many different musical styles, including conceptual rock, art rock, glam metal, hard rock, new wave, pop rock, soft rock, experimental rock, heavy metal, and industrial rock. In recent times he has returned more to his garage rock roots.

MK III: The Final Concerts, alternatively entitled Archive Alive, is a live album released by Deep Purple, recorded during the band's 1975 European tour in support of Stormbringer. It was released in 1996.

This double CD release is culled from the very last performances from Deep Purple MK III featuring Ritchie Blackmore before he left to launch his new band Rainbow with singer Ronnie James Dio. The album features for the most part material from the last concert of the tour held at the Palais des Sports in Paris on April 7, 1975, with a few tracks taken from two shows in Graz, Austria, April 3 and 4.

Since the invention of the DVD I was eagerly waiting for live footage from the early Uriah Heep line-up. Last year this 2-DVD/book set was released as "Classic Heep - Live from the Byron era"
, what a treat! Mainly due to the efforts from fellow Dutchman Louis Rentrop (named by the band as the 1 UH fan on this globe!) here is an excellent 2-DVD (including a wonderful book) featuring live footage from Uriah Heep, recorded between 1972 and 1976 (and some footage from David Byron solo, five songs from "Rough diamond - 1977). Their frontman was David Byron, an archetypical rock and roll singer: dynamic, dramatic, ego-centric, theatrical and extravert on stage and capricious, narcistic, emotional instabile and self-destructive (like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones) in his own life, no wonder he died as an alcohol-addict in 1985. On this DVD you can perfectly witness his ego-centric and theatrical, a bit queery 'stage antics', like a 'Freddy Mercury-avant-la-lettre'!

DVD1 features concerts from Japan, the UK and the USA in the era 1973-76. Eventually we can enjoy Ken Hensley on his Hammond organ and with slide guitar play (like on "Tears in my eyes"), Mick Box with his fiery and enthousiastic guitarwork and from the propulsive and solid rhythm-section Gary Thain/Lee Kerslake. But the focus is on David Byron, he gives most of the songs an extra dimension like "Sunrise", "Love machine", "The easy road" and "Shady lady" and especially in the R&R-medley, EXCELLENT! My highlight on DVD1 is the version of "July morning" (a compilation of live material 1973-76 like the Dutch rock festival Pinkpop 1976, my father didn't allow me to go because of the 'drugs abuse' he explained later!).

DVD2 (named "Collectors Rarities") features songs from Pinkpop 1976 with an extended guitar solo from Mick Box. Other strong tracks are "Look at yourself", "The wizard" (acoustic guitars) and "July morning" (studio 1972, USA) delivering a great shot from above on his Hammond B3 organ and Minimoog synthesizer! And we can watch John Wetton (he had just left Roxy Music) during the USA tour and on Pinkpop 1976. The final part belongs to David Byron solo featuring five songs from his solo album "Rough Diamond", nice for the UH die-hards! The included book offers lots of interesting information and fine pictures.

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts. They subsequently dropped out of their studies to further concentrate on the band that would ultimately become Dream Theater.
Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remained together along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess until September 8, 2010 when Portnoy left the band. In October 2010, the band held auditions for Portnoy's replacement drummer. Mike Mangini was announced as the new permanent drummer on April 29, 2011. The band finished recording a new album, A Dramatic Turn of Events, which is due September 13, 2011.

John Cameron Fogerty (born May 28, 1945) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known for his time with the swamp rock/roots rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) and as a 1 solo recording artist.
Fogerty has a rare distinction of being named on Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists at 40 and the list of 100 Greatest Singers at 72. The songs "Proud Mary" and "Born on the Bayou" also rank amongst the Greatest Pop songs ("Proud Mary," 41) and Guitar songs ("Born on the Bayou," 53). Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California and is the younger brother of the late Tom Fogerty. He attended El Cerrito High School along with the other members of CCR.

This video more than adequately convinces the viewer that The Who were, and still are rock-n-roll's GREATEST live band then, now, and forever more, in perpetuity!
(a deliberate overusage of grammatical tenses, but what the hell, I enjoyed it immensely!) Whether seeing Keith Moon bash the living hell out of his drumkit to the tune of "So Sad About Us" early on or the entire band playing the hell out of their set at the Tanglewood Music Shed gig or their wonderfully blistering performance at The Isle of Wight Festival attests to The Who's exponential talent for playing live on stage. Pete Townshend's stingingly nasty guitar playing (including a number of trademark windmill guitar chords) is nicely complemented by Roger Daltrey's fearless vocals, John Entwistle's incredibly fluid bass riffs and Moon's maniacally yet timely drum assaults all throughout-and trust me, as an ardently passionate Who fan, this video MORE than cuts it- is someting that even non-Who fans will love! Of special note is the gig at 'The Tanglewood Music Shed' where it all comes together so wonderfully that you'll be left absolutely stunned! And, of course, the interspersed commentary by the three surviving members is also quite interesting; Pete Townshend's mention of the fact that The Who were "..scruffy, ugly , noisy horrible, loud, inconsiderate bunch of ---holes " and that in conclusion, "We became successful because that's what the AUDIENCE were like TOO." adds balance to this more than intriguing video.

1971 was a relatively quiet, yet very crucial year for David Bowie.  The early months were spent in America doing press and publicity but with no performing since he didn’t have his union card yet.  The summer months were spent writing and recording Hunky Dory with a well received appearance at the Glastonbury Fair on June 23rd.  After the new album was finished he went back to America for more publicity and upon his return to England played this show at the Friars Club in Aylesbury on September 25th.
